Cold Floors Start Below Them
Rim Joist & Basement Wall Insulation tackles the strip of framing that sits on top of your foundation. The rim joist, also called the band joist, closes off the ends of the floor joists, and in most Battle Creek basements it is bare lumber with gaps at the sill and around every joist. Outside air comes straight in, settles on the basement floor, chills the floor above and gets drawn up through the house.
Closed-cell is the right tool
Batts stuffed into the rim bays do not stop air, and they let humid basement air reach the cold wood, where it condenses. Closed-cell foam sprayed directly onto the rim and sill seals every gap and insulates in the same pass. At HomeGuide's R-5 to R-7 per inch, two to three inches gives roughly R-10 to R-21. Most rim joists are finished in a day.
Basement walls
If you are finishing the basement, insulate the walls before the framing goes up. Closed-cell foam on the concrete or block keeps damp air off the cold wall and adds R-value in a thin layer. Fiberglass against bare concrete can hold moisture against the wall. For Zone 5 basement walls, the 2021 IECC lists R-15 continuous, R-19 in the cavity or R-13 plus R-5 continuous; your building department will say which code applies to your permit.
Older foundations
Many older Battle Creek homes have stone, block or early poured foundations with uneven tops and lots of gaps at the sill. Spray foam follows the irregular surface, which is hard to do with rigid board. We check for water first, since foam does not stop water coming through the wall.
Radon
Michigan EGLE estimates about one in four Michigan homes has radon above the federal action level and says sealing alone is rarely a lasting fix. If you are finishing a basement, test first and install mitigation before the walls are covered.

Rim Joist & Basement Wall Insulation Questions
How thick should rim joist foam be?
Two to three inches of closed cell is common, giving about R-10 to R-21. We write the depth on your estimate.
Should old batts be removed from the rim?
Yes. Foam has to stick to the wood to seal it, and batts often hide moisture or mice.
Does Consumers Energy offer a rim joist rebate?
Its current chart lists $50 for insulating all accessible rim joist areas for combined or gas customers.
Can I finish my basement right after foaming?
Yes, once the foam has cured and the area has aired out, usually the next day.
