Holes in the Ceiling You Cannot See
Attic Air Sealing & Insulation is where most Battle Creek houses get the biggest return. In a pre-war house, the attic floor is full of openings: the tops of balloon-framed wall cavities, holes for wiring, gaps around chimneys and plumbing stacks, light fixtures and the attic hatch. Warm air pours up through them all winter. Adding insulation on top without sealing those openings is like piling blankets on a bed with the window open.
Signs your attic is leaking
Icicles and ice dams along the eaves, frost on the underside of the roof deck or on nail tips in January, snow that melts off your roof faster than the neighbors', and upstairs rooms that are cold in winter and hot in summer all point to air and heat getting into the attic. Battle Creek's snowfall, about 64.6 inches a year on average, makes those signs easy to spot.
The target
Calhoun County is in Climate Zone 5A. The Department of Energy recommends R-60 for an attic with no insulation, or adding R-49 on top of 3 to 4 inches already there. Michigan's newer energy code moves new construction toward R-60 ceilings as well. Many attics we open have R-11 to R-19 of old fill or batts, if that.
How we do it
We start by moving or raking back old insulation where needed to reach the leaks, then seal the bypasses with foam, caulk and fire-rated material around chimneys and flues. We install baffles at the eaves so air can still move under the roof deck, insulate and weatherstrip the hatch or pull-down stairs, and blow cellulose or fiberglass to the written depth, with depth markers left so you can check it.
Story-and-a-half houses
The half-story homes common in Battle Creek's older neighborhoods have sloped ceilings, short kneewalls and small attic pockets on each side. Each pocket has to be sealed and insulated separately, and the sloped section often needs dense-pack or foam from above. We map them out on the first visit.
Rebates
Consumers Energy's current chart lists attic rebates for at least 500 square feet of attic, from $125 to $200 for combined customers depending on the final R-value, with a December 31 deadline. We write the final R-value on your paperwork.

Attic Air Sealing & Insulation Questions
Will air sealing stop my ice dams?
It removes most of the warm air that melts roof snow, which is the main cause. Roof shape and ventilation also matter, and we check both.
Is blown-in or spray foam better for my attic?
For an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value. Foam under the roof deck fits attics with ductwork, a furnace or planned living space.
Do I need to remove my old attic insulation?
Not if it is dry and clean. It comes out if it is wet, moldy, contaminated or in the way of sealing.
How long does an attic job take?
Most are done in one to two days, including sealing.
