The Most R-Value per Dollar

Blown-In Insulation is often the right answer in a Battle Creek house, and we recommend it whenever it does the job for less than foam. Loose cellulose or fiberglass is blown through a hose into the attic or into closed wall cavities. In an open attic it builds a deep, even layer that covers joists and fills around obstacles, and it costs far less per square foot than foam.

Attics

Once the attic floor is sealed, we blow insulation to the depth that reaches the Department of Energy's Zone 5 target: R-60 for an empty attic or R-49 added over 3 to 4 inches. HomeGuide puts blown-in at $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot overall and attic jobs at $900 to $3,600. Fixr's range for a roughly 1,500-square-foot attic is $1,750 to $5,500.

Closed walls in older homes

With nearly 30% of Battle Creek's homes built in 1939 or earlier (2019-2023 ACS, via Point2), many walls have no insulation at all. We drill small holes, usually from the outside under a lifted course of siding or from inside in a tidy pattern, and blow cellulose into each cavity at high density. Dense packing fills the bay and resists settling, and it slows air through the wall. Holes are plugged and patched. HomeGuide puts dense-pack at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot.

Cellulose or fiberglass

Cellulose is made from recycled paper treated for fire and pests; it packs more R-value per inch and slows air a bit better. Fiberglass is lighter and settles less over time. We recommend one based on your attic and walls and tell you why.

What we check first

Before filling walls we look for live knob-and-tube wiring, signs of water from bad flashing or gutters, and blocking inside the cavities. Live knob-and-tube needs an electrician's attention before walls are insulated.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

How much does blown-in insulation cost?

HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot and attics at $900 to $3,600; Fixr puts a typical job at $3,000 to $7,000. We give you a written price after measuring.

Does blown-in insulation settle?

Loose fill settles a little, which is why we blow to a settled depth. Dense-packed walls are packed tightly enough to resist settling.

Can you blow insulation into plaster walls?

Yes. We drill small holes, fill the cavity and patch the holes.

Cellulose or fiberglass?

Cellulose packs more R-value per inch and slows air better; fiberglass is lighter and settles less. We suggest one based on your house.
