Some Insulation Does More Harm Than Good
Old Insulation Removal makes sense when what is in your attic, walls or crawl space has stopped working. Insulation that has been soaked by a roof leak, packed flat over decades, fouled by mice, squirrels or raccoons, or mixed with debris from past remodels does little to slow heat and can hold odors and moisture. It also covers the attic floor leaks that have to be sealed.
How we remove it
Loose fill is pulled out with a high-powered vacuum through a hose to bags or a container outside, so it does not travel through your house. Batts are bagged by hand. Once the attic is clear we clean up, seal the bypasses that were buried, and reinsulate to depth. HomeAdvisor's national average for removal is about $900, and about $1,852 for removal and replacement combined.
Failed spray foam
We also cut out spray foam that was installed badly or in the wrong place, such as open-cell foam sprayed on cold concrete that is now wet, or foam that never cured right. Foam removal is slow work; HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot and Fixr up to about $5 when it has to be chipped by hand.
Vermiculite
Gray-brown, pebbly vermiculite turns up in some older Battle Creek attics. It should be tested before anyone disturbs it, because some vermiculite contains asbestos. If it tests positive, removal has to be handled by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor; HomeAdvisor lists that work at $1,190 to $3,255. We do not disturb suspect material.
Barns and outbuildings
Old fiberglass in pole barns often falls apart, soaks up condensation and hosts nests. We take it down and replace it with closed-cell foam on the steel when that fits the building's use.

Old Insulation Removal Questions
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Only if it is wet, moldy, contaminated or blocking air sealing. Dry, clean insulation can stay.
How long does attic removal take?
Usually a day to vacuum out, then sealing and new insulation.
Can you remove insulation from a barn?
Yes. We take down failed fiberglass and can replace it with foam on the steel.
What if my attic has vermiculite?
Get it tested before anyone disturbs it. If it contains asbestos, a licensed abatement contractor has to remove it.
