When the Roof Rains Inside
Pole Barn & Farm Building Insulation is a big part of our work outside Battle Creek, where farms and rural lots in Calhoun, Barry, Eaton and Branch counties carry post-frame buildings for machinery, livestock, storage and hobby shops. Bare steel roofs and walls lose heat fast, and when warm, moist air inside touches the cold metal, it condenses and drips. That ruins stored hay and grain, rusts equipment and soaks whatever is underneath.
Why closed-cell foam
Closed-cell foam bonds directly to steel panels, purlins and girts, seals the seams and fastener holes, and keeps humid air away from the cold metal. HomeGuide lists it at R-5 to R-7 per inch. It also deadens rain noise and adds a little rigidity. Open-cell foam is not used on steel because it lets vapor pass to the cold surface.
Dry storage or heated shop
How much foam a building needs depends on what you do in it. A machine shed that only needs to stop dripping may need a thin layer on the roof and upper walls. A shop you heat through a Battle Creek winter, where January lows average around 17F, needs more on the roof and walls and careful sealing at the eaves and doors. We ask how the building is used and size the foam to that.
Livestock buildings
Animal buildings produce a lot of moisture. Foam can control condensation, but ventilation has to be planned with it, and some spaces need a protective coating where animals can reach the foam. We talk through the use before we recommend anything.
Garages and detached shops
Wood-framed garages can take foam or a combination of air sealing and batts. Attached garages also need the shared wall with the house sealed so fumes stay out of living space.
Barriers and codes
If people will work in the building, foam generally needs a thermal or ignition barrier depending on the product. Michigan's rules for agricultural buildings differ from houses, so we go over what applies to your building.

Pole Barn & Farm Building Insulation Questions
Can spray foam stop my pole barn from dripping?
Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel keeps warm, moist air off the cold metal, which is what causes the dripping.
How thick should foam be in a heated shop?
Thicker than in a storage building. We size it to how you heat and use the space and write the depth on the estimate.
Do you insulate wood-sided barns?
Yes, though old barns with gaps everywhere may be better served by insulating a framed room inside than the whole shell. We will tell you which makes sense.
Does foam need to be covered in a barn?
If people work in the space, usually yes, with a thermal or ignition barrier depending on the product. Agricultural buildings can be treated differently, and we explain what applies.
